About the Author

Robert J. LaCosta's passion is to make the poignant plain. To this end, he plies metaphor, symbolism, analogy and allegory without wearing out their welcome. He coined the phrase and process "metaphor-du-jour" to help readers find God in their every day through the deliberate observation of portals to heaven. The writer draws from three decades as a specialist in the field of hearing to guide us into elevating our natural senses in order to discover the supernatural. His devotional, "Portals to Heaven," subtitled "Experience the Moment-by-Moment Presence of God Through Metaphor-du-Jour," was birthed out of his devotional that has ignited his readers' passion for the portal. But he has also applied these literary devices to novels, screenplays, children's stories, blogs and songs. In the case of the latter, he has penned over 2,000 songs in various styles...but always with inspirational symbols and twists. His treatment of the longest-running religious-freedom lawsuit in United States history is a prime example of how he takes the complicated and makes a "case" for understandable allegory. In his novel and screenplay, "Gamaliel's Advice - Taking Down God," LaCosta pens an intriguing, prophetic and simple metaphor of the true story of the cross at The Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial in San Diego. By contrast, "Like Father, Like Son," is a pure allegorical tale of the devotion of a son for his father and the father's love for his coming-of-age boy. In this moving novelette, the author brings deep insight into the relationship of Jesus and His Father without a mention of either through a thinly-veiled retelling of the gospel set in the Village of Northcliff. LaCosta's practice of journaling led him to produce a signature line of journals and coffee mugs called "The King's Favorite Book." In this 560-word allegory that begins each journal, we learn about the "ear of God" through the brief tale of a man who gets an audience with his king. In the author's words, it is "a story that neither you nor God will ever forget." He is the founder of a 30-year old publication on seniors, writes the monthly column, Retiring Retirement, and has interviewed everyone from famous seniors to the elder next door. He is a worship leader, served in many short-term missions, worked in urban ministry and volunteers as a Rescue Mission chaplain. He is married, lives in the Albany, New York area and enjoys family, friends and the greater church life.
