Welcome to the trimmed down newsletter!

Two news items:

First, Capital District Local First was awarded a $2500 grant by the New England Independent Booksellers Association for the purposes of educating currentmembers and attracting new members. Our very first grant, but we hope not the last.

Second, the next Market Block Books book group title is Big Rock Candy Mountain by Wallace Stegner. The discussion will be held at Flavours Café, 228 4th St in Troy, on Monday, April 28 at 7:00 pm. We hope to see you there! (If you don't have the book yet, no problem! Jut come into our either of our stores and mention the book club to get 20% off the title!)

New books for your springtime reading:

Nice to Come Home To by Rebecca Flowers is the story of a control freak whose life is falling apart. It is light and fun, and the author will be at the Book House for a signing on
Thursday, April 17 at 7:00 PM.

Sepulchre by Kate Mosse (author, not emaciated model) was Susan Novotny’s vacation read in Florida, until she came back to her poolside lounge and it had disappeared! Apparently a fan of Labyrinth, Kate’s first book, absconded with her advance copy. Fortunately, we had a second copy at the store and Susan is happily re-immersed infin de siècle France.

The White Tiger by Adiga Aravind is set in present day India and narrated by a self-made successful capitalist. The differences between old India and new India are clearly defined, and the cost of moving from one to the other is high. Fast paced and contemporary.

Certain Girls by Jennifer Weiner is the sequel to her first bestseller, Good in Bed. Need I say more?

Unaccustomed Earth by Jhumpa Lahiri, although her third book, is the first I have read. I am a bad, bad bookseller! I immediately read The Namesake, and Interpreter of Maladies is on my vacation reading list.

Girls Like Us: Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon—And the Journey of a Generation by Sheila Weller is a wonderful book for women of a certain age. If you grew up female in the ‘60’s and ‘70’s, you’ll love it

Armageddon in Retrospect by Kurt Vonnegut is a posthumous collection of previously unpublished nonfiction pieces. So it goes.

Mary Roach, author of Stiff and Spook, has a third winner out this month—Bonk: The Curious Coupling of Science and Sex. Admit it, you’ve always wanted to know how they do all those sex studies! You’ll find out in this book—Mary puts her body (and her husband’s) on the line while doing her fearless research.

Philip Pullman fans have a treat in Once Upon a Time in the North, a prequel to His Dark Materials. I haven’t read it yet, but it is Philip Pullman—it’s got to be good.

Teen readers Will enjoy Audrey, Wait! by Robin Benway. Imagine dumping your slacker musician boyfriend, who writes a song about it. Then imagine that song becomes the hottest single in the country and everyone knows it is about you. Life becomes very complicated for Audrey when she becomes famous—an excellent read.
