BH: Gene Bunnell signs and discusses: Transforming Providence: Rebirth of a Post Industrial City
Professor Gene Bunnell will talk about his new book Transforming Providence: Rebirth of a Post Industrial City.
According to Bunnell, there is much that Albany can learn from Providence’s experience. Both are historic cities located on rivers and the capitals of their respective states. Both cities also saw their urban fabrics torn apart and their appeal as places to live undermined by Interstate highways constructed in the 1960s, and subsequently experienced major losses of population between the 1970s and 1980s. Here the parallels seem to end. Since the 1980s, Providence has achieved a remarkable turnaround. Meanwhile, Albany appears stuck-- and to suffer from a lack of imagination and ambition.
In his remarks, Bunnell will identify policy decisions, planning processes, infrastructure investments and actions by non-profit organizations that helped jump-start Providence’s transformation.
Last but not least, Bunnell will offer a series of lessons citizens and elected officials in Upstate NY cities can learn from Providence’s experience, which he believes could help achieve comparable urban transformations across Upstate New York.
